Garden of the Gods

I live about 15 minutes from Garden of the Gods in Colorado. As a resident it’s easy to forget this place is properly famous and people come from all over the world to see it. It’s kind of like a National Park…but nope, it’s just a city park and it’s totally free. Fantastic.

I’ve been experimenting with 6x6 for landscape. It’s…fine? I’m not totally wild about the format but the square frame forces you to find other ways to make a photo feel dynamic. And, yeah, at some point these are a bunch of pictures of rocks. So that’s another element of the challenge.

I need to put together a blog post about scanning negatives. These 6x6 images are two digital photos that have been stitched. It’s just enough of a pain in the ass - vs 35mm - that it makes me think twice about shooting medium format. But, then again, when it goes right you get some pretty amazing results.

In any case, as usual, I also had my MP around my neck and went through a roll or two with that.

Now that the sun is starting to get low it’s easier to get nice light in the periods when I can actually get out and take photos here. I’d like to do regular visits this winter. Like I said, at some point you’re just taking photos of big rocks - I guess that’s ultimately what landscape photography is - but perhaps I could incorporate people in some way. If nothing else, it’s a pretty good way to give a sense of scale.
