Point Defiance, Again

I’ve been getting out with a camera more or less every day in the last six weeks or so, trying hard to focus on basics and see the familar places in a new way. My usual loop - Titlow, Point Defiance, Ruston, Downtown, Foss - still has lots to see. I’m hoping this habit will help when I’m traveling in places that are actually new.

Anyway, Point Defiance again. Up the hill from the marina. First up was the remains of the Bear Grotto, one of the turn of the century pre-zoo exhibits.

From this point you can meander across the street to the rose garden or up the path to the zoo. The path behind the zoo is closed right now - it has been for years but they’ve finally paved it and put in the new trail so hopefully that connects back in soon.

The rose garden really is a pretty amazing thing, especially as a free public park. They also have a small handful of “experimental” beds - mainly dahlias - that come in later in the summer.

There’s also a Japanese Garden. It’s always a bit deserted, I think because it’s a farther walk from the parking than the rose garden. The signs around the pagoda give the history of the area; there used to be a trolley that ran up from Old Town. And public baths at the top of the hill. Now it’s gone and we’ve paved over it. It’s amazing how we somehow go backward in the name of going forward.

On the way back to the car this dude popped out and started working on dinner. He even posed for me. I found out after the fact that my camera was set to JPEG mode; all of these are more or less straight out of camera. They’re fine, still a successful little walk.
