During the last week of December - between Christmas the new year - we drove our then-new-to-us 2006 Lexus LX470 from Kansas City, Kansas to Tacoma, Washington. We made a (successful!) attempt to avoid snow by driving southeast through New Mexico, Arizona, and California then heading north on I-5.
The first day was a ten hour jaunt across Kansas toward Santa Fe, New Mexico. Day two was supposed to get us to Phoenix, but as we were pulling out of the hotel parking lot the next morning we heard a bang, felt a stutter, and experienced the terrible feeling of a front differential pinion gear eating itself for lunch. Whoops.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt. Unfortunately, front differentials are an expensive part. Fortunately, a mechanic who had one was just down the road! Unfortunately, it was a Lexus dealership. Again, whoops.
To their credit, they “gave” us a rental. And they were able to get a new differential installed within 24 hours. Very pleasant folks, in a kind of we-have-you-over-a-barrel way. Haven’t had a problem since.
Anyway, while we were waiting for the car we stopped in at Meow Wolf. It’s part art collective, part performance hall, part really weird place. Here are some photos.
